Synopsis. Prior to the commencement of an important international peace conference in Antwerp, the Bureau receives word that Dr. Gregory Holman (played by George Voskovec), a champion chess player who is also a spy and code expert for a Soviet Bloc country, was apparently assassinated in an explosion that also took the lives of two other patrons of Ali’s, a swank D.C. nightclub. Holman was about to defect to the United States. Knowing how important the doctor’s knowledge about Soviet intelligence is to American efforts, FBI agents, including Rhodes, had kept tight surveillance on him. Erskine, however, suspects that Holman somehow avoided detection and may be alive—which he is. Holman has gone into hiding from his native country. Though the inspector eventually locates him, Holman refuses to cooperate with the Bureau unless Erskine can guarantee the safe passage of his children out of Europe.
