Jim Colucci, deputy editor for CBS Watch magazine, will join us this weekend as we celebrate the 100th birthday of legendary producer Norman Lear. Jim collaborated with Norman Lear on All in the Family: The Show That Changed Television, an oral history of All in the Family that particularly focuses on fifty episodes that, in the opinion of Norman Lear, best exemplify how All in the Family not only changed the face of television when it premiered in 1971, but remains as funny and relevant as ever today. Norman Lear turns 100 on Wednesday, July 27.
All in the Family: The Show That Changed Television includes behind the scenes photographs, script pages, production designs, previously unseen notes from Norman Lear, commentary from Rob Reiner, Sally Struthers, Norman Lear, and many of the writers and guest stars on All in the Family, plus archival commentary from Carroll O’Connor and Jean Stapleton, select letters from viewers, and a whole lot more. Jim Colucci will join us in our second hour.
Also this week: We’ll play Part 2 of a conversation that began on our last program with writer, producer, and author Jay Moriarty. Jay, along with his longtime writing partner Mike Milligan, spent seven years writing and producing The Jeffersons, one of the longest-running shows in the entire Norman Lear canon, while his memoir, Honky in the House, takes readers behind the scenes of Tandem Productions and shows why Norman Lear was, and is, one of the most courageous producers in television. Jay Moriarty joins us in our first hour.
Jay Moriarty’s latest book, Deadeye, pays homage to Roy Rogers, The Lone Ranger, The Cisco Kid, and other favorite movie and TV cowboys.
Plus: We will replay our September 2014 conversation with Larry Storch, the actor known around the world as Corporal Agarn on the classic comedy series F Troop (ABC, 1965-1967). Larry Storch passed away this past Friday, July 8 at the age of ninety nine.
At the time we spoke to Larry in 2014, he was getting ready for his final West Coast appearance at The World Famous Comedy Store, the very same venue where he made his stand-up comedy debut more than sixty years ago (back when it was known as Ciro’s). Larry talked about the major career boost that he received (thanks to Lucille Ball), plus he shared some memories of working alongside Tony Curtis, Peter Falk, Don Adams and, of course, Forrest Tucker. We’ll replay our conversation with Larry Storch in our first hour.
