We’ll drop by the Deluxe Apartment in the Sky this week as we welcome award-winning television writer/producer Jay Moriarty. Jay spent about thirty years writing and producing sitcoms for network television, including eight years for Norman Lear and Tandem Productions—seven of which Jay and his longtime writing partner, Mike Milligan, spent writing and producing The Jeffersons (CBS, 1975-1985), one of the longest-running shows in the entire Norman Lear canon. Though often considered an anomaly among Norman Lear shows (in that it mostly focused on making us laugh every week), The Jeffersons also made us stop and think once in a while about such topical issues as interracial marriage, suicide, fundamentalism, transgender identity, the Civil Rights Movement, Dr. Martin Luther King, and even the Ku Klux Klan.
Jay’s memoir, Honky in the House: Writing & Producing The Jeffersons, not only takes you inside the writing room of The Jeffersons, but provides a capsule history of the so-called Golden Age of TV Sitcoms, as well as many great tips for anyone considering a career in television writing, or writing comedy in general. We’ll go behind the scenes of The Jeffersons, plus we’ll learn the back story of “The Draft Dodger,” the controversial episode of All in the Family from December 1976 that Jay and Mike wrote, and more. Jay Moriarty joins us in our second hour.
This week’s show will also include an encore presentation of our special ten-question Bob Crane TV Trivia Quiz featuring guest emcee Robert Crane—the eldest son of Bob Crane, and an accomplished screenwriter, journalist, and author in his own right. Though some questions are more obscure than others, every question in the quiz touches on Bob Crane’s radio and TV career, one way or another.
We’ll also talk about Bob’s latest book, Hollywood Plateau, a collection of candid interviews with the likes of Jimmy Kimmel, Bruce Dern, John Wayne, Teri Garr, Jack Nicholson, Cheech and Chong, Karen Black, Oscar de la Hoya, and other celebrities and newsmakers that Bob originally conducted circa 1974 to 2013, before the era of political correctness—a time when industry people still spoke their minds without self and organizational censorship. In many cases, Bob interviewed these celebrities when they were just coming onto the scene, before they became as famous as they are today. Robert Crane joins us in our first hour.
