Most of you know Blanca Blanco for her starring roles in the Tubi series Tale of Tails, as well as such movies as Betrayed. If you watch the nightly entertainment shows, you’ve probably seen Blanca in various red carpet venues, including her memorable Oscar night red carpet appearance with Guillermo Rodriguez of The Jimmy Kimmel Show.
Blanca has just released her first book—the title of which, Breaking the Mold, is very appropriate because she herself has shattered many perceptions throughout her life and career. For one, while the stereotype of a model is “pretty on the outside, shallow on the inside,” Blanca has graduate degrees in psychology and social work, plus real world experience as a social worker and hospice care worker that has provided her with depth, knowledge, and empathy for others. Just as important, she is a woman of incredible resilience who not only overcame extreme poverty—including growing up in a garage for two years without heat or hot running water while weathering the frigid winters of Washington state—but vowed when she was nine years old that she would not let poverty define her and make her into another statistic. Blanca Blanco will join us in our second hour.
Breaking the Mold is the inspiring story of how a young Mexican-American girl, the daughter of immigrants and one of seven children, overcame more obstacles in her life than anybody since Job, including extreme poverty, bullying, and abuse as a child, the loss of her home in Malibu as a result of the devastating Woolsey Fire in 2018, and the death of her mother in 2021 to become one of the most successful actresses in the entertainment industry today.
Also this week: Chuck Harter will join us for a look back at The Untouchables (ABC, 1959-1963), the long-running crime drama starring Robert Stack as federal agent Eliot Ness, and the show that put Quinn Martin on the map as a creative force in television. Martin produced the first season of The Untouchables for Desilu Productions (Desi Arnaz was executive producer), infusing it with many of the characteristics that would become his trademark once Martin became an independent producer throughout the 1960s and 1970s, including top-notch production values, motion picture-like quality, tight-knit editing, night for night shooting, and an amazing array of guest stars every week.
Chuck recently rediscovered The Untouchables while sheltering in place during COVID and was pleased at how the series continues hold up today. We’ll talk about The Untouchables, plus Chuck will tell us about his new book, when he joins us in our first hour.
