This week’s program will include Part 2 of a conversation that began last week with Donzaleigh Abernathy, star of Lifetime Television’s Any Day Now, and the youngest daughter of the Rev. Ralph David Abernathy—the man who co-founded the Civil Rights Movement along with his best friend, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Donzaleigh is the lead soloist on “The Listening,” a unique social justice choral project inspired by “Beyond Vietnam: A Time for Break Silence,” a speech delivered by Dr. King in April 1967. We’ll ask Donzaleigh how she became involved with “The Listening.” We’ll also talk about the direct line between Donzaleigh and national youth poet laureate Amanda Gorman, and how Rev. Abernathy encouraged Donzaleigh to pursue her career as an artist just before he died. Donzaleigh Abernathy will join us in our second hour.
“The Listening” is now available as a single through Amazon, iTunes, Spotify, and Pandora.
Donzaleigh’s book Partners to History: Martin Luther King Jr., Ralph David Abernathy, and The Civil Right Movement is a pictorial history of the Civil Rights Movement that also captures the words of both Dr. King and Rev. Abernathy, while showing you first-hand glimpses of who they were as fathers, as husbands, and as people. Donzaleigh will discuss Partners to History in a two-hour Zoom talk hosted by the Pasadena Public Library on Saturday, Feb. 27 beginning at 2pm. The Zoom talk is free, but registration is required. Go to CityofPasadena.net/library/calendar/ for more information.
Also in our second hour: We will celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of The Point, the first feature-length animated movie made for television, which aired for the first time on the ABC Movie of the Week in February 1971. Written by Harry Nilsson, and featuring the voice of Mike Lookinland (The Brady Bunch) and original songs by Nilsson, The Point remains an iconic film, despite a somewhat convoluted broadcast and distribution history that includes five different narrators for its various releases.
Plus: Earlier this month, Time-Life made its comprehensive DVD release Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In: The Complete Series available at retail for the very first time. With that in mind, we will replay our September 2013 conversation with Laugh-In star JoAnne Worley as part of our first hour.
A force of nature in every sense of the word, JoAnne Worley is also one of the most accomplished musical stars and stage actresses the industry has ever known, having starred in such productions as Mame, Gypsy, Hello, Dolly!, The Drowsy Chaperone, The Pirates of Penzance, The Odd Couple and Wicked. A onetime member of the acclaimed improv group Second City, JoAnne will talk about her career in comedy, plus we’ll ask her about her work as president of Actors and Others for Animals, one of the longest-standing animal welfare organizations in Los Angeles.
