Most of you know probably know Gabriel Jarret best for his lead role as the fourteen-year-old whiz in the 1985 teen comedy Real Genius (also starring Val Kilmer). One of the few child stars who successfully made the transition to acting roles as an adult, Gabe has appeared in such films and TV series as The Karate Kid: Part 3, Apollo 13, Frost/Nixon, Goodnight Beantown, The American President, and the original 21 Jump Street.

Gabe recently played an auto repair shop owner/ambulance dispatcher in the true tornado survival motion picture 13 Minutes. He will soon be seen in the romantic comedy Ask Me to Dance (also starring Tom Malloy, Briana Evigan, Jesse Kove, and Joyce DeWitt), and in the limited series Bring on the Dancing Horses (starring Kate Bosworth). We’ll ask Gabe about all three of these projects, plus we’ll talk about his background in American Sign Language—a skill set that has helped him find work in many venues in between acting roles. Gabriel Jarret will join us in our second hour.

Also this week: We will look back at the broadcast career of John Madden, the legendary Super Bowl-winning and NFL Hall of Fame coach of the Oakland Raiders who went on to enjoy an extraordinarily successful career on television as an NFL game analyst and commentator, including seventeen Emmy Awards. John Madden passed away Tuesday, Dec. 28 at age eighty-eight. The first NFL broadcaster to call games on four major broadcast TV networks, Madden prepared for each telecast almost as if he were coaching, including screening game film and interviewing the coaches and players from both teams before that week’s game. That, plus his masterful use of such technology as the telestrator, gave him insight into each team, which he then conveyed to viewers in his inimitable style, using simple, layman’s terms.

Joining us will be Steve Beverly, recently retired professor of broadcast journalism at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee and the host of Steve Beverly’s TV Classics. Besides his extensive background as a TV news professional, Steve did play-by-play for men’s and women’s college basketball on television for twenty-five years, including thirteen years on a national level. Steve Beverly will join us in our first hour.

Our first hour will also include Part 2 of our final conversation with Ron Bacon, the Emmy Award-winning associate director whose long career in network TV production spanned more than 12,500 broadcasts and covered just about every type of programming available. Ron Bacon passed away Tuesday, Dec. 21 at age ninety-one.

Also an accomplished musician and songwriter, Ron talks about some of the many music legends that he met throughout his career—some of which, such as Liberace and Little Richard, became close personal friends.
