We’ll bring you Part 2 of a conversation that began last week with Emmy Award-winning writer, producer, and director Joseph Dougherty (thirtysomething, Judging Amy, Pretty Little Liars). Among other topics, we’ll ask Joe about his award-winning stage play Chester Bailey, plus we’ll talk about some of the various screenwriters and novelists who have influenced or inspired us to become writers.

Joe’s new book, A Screenwriter’s Companion: Instruction, Opinion, Encouragement offers insights and advice, both practical and nonpractical, to writers and would-be writers about the writing process, how to survive in “the business,” and reflections on the influences that led Joe to a successful career. A Screenwriter’s Companion is available now through Amazon.com as well as your local bookseller; a select number of autographed editions are available through Fayetteville Mafia Press.

A new production of Chester Bailey opens Wednesday, Oct. 5. at the Irish Repertory Theatre in New York City and continues through Sunday, Nov. 6. For tickets and more information, call (212) 727-2737 or visit IrishRep.org.

Our second hour will include an encore presentation of a conversation that originally aired in November 2020 with groundbreaking comedian Tom Dreesen. A steady fixture on late night television for more than four decades, including sixty-one appearances on The Tonight Show and countless appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman, Tom traveled the country for fourteen years as the opening act for Frank Sinatra, plus he performed with actor/comedian Tim Reid for six years early in his career—during which time he and Tim broke many barriers throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s as the first, and only, interracial stand-up comedy team. Tom will provide some insight on how to find your own voice as a stand-up comedian, plus he’ll share the invaluable advice that Jack Benny once gave Tom early in his career.

Tom Dreesen’s memoir, Still Standing: My Journey from Streets and Saloons to the Stage, and Sinatra, not only includes great stories of Tom’s working with Tim Reid, Sammy Davis Jr., and Frank Sinatra, but shows readers why his roots in Harvey, Illinois have always been central to his life and career.

Also this week: A replay of our November 2020 conversation with Emmy-nominated writer, producer, actor and playwright Billy Van Zandt. As a playwright Billy, along with his longtime writing and producer Jane Millmore, co-wrote twenty-five plays that have been produced many times over throughout the world, including Silent Laughter, You’ve Got Hate Mail, Drop Dead! and The Boomer Boys Musical. As a producer Billy received an Emmy nomination for his work on I Love Lucy: The Very First Show, the acclaimed CBS special that not only introduced TV audiences to the lost pilot episode of I Love Lucy, but was the first show that showed viewers what a genius Desi Arnaz was, and how the many innovations he originated are now standard practice in television today. Billy also received a People’s Choice Award, a Prism Award and two NAACP Image Awards for producing Martin and The Hughleys, while his other writing and production credits include Newhart, Anything But Love, Daddy Dearest, Suddenly Susan, and The Wayans Brothers.

Billy’s memoir, Get in the Car, Jane! Adventures in the TV Wasteland, not only provides a front row seat to the absurdity that often goes on behind the scenes of network TV sitcoms, but provides useful tips on how to deal with the day-to-day frustrations of your job, no matter what you do for a living. We’ll replay our conversation with Billy Van Zandt in our second hour.
