Fans of daytime television know Kevin Spirtas for his roles as Jonas Chamberlain on One Life to Live, Tom Gallagher on Rituals, and his seven-plus-year stint as the scheming Dr. Craig Wesley on Days of Our Lives. What you may not know is that he is also a pioneer in the world of digital soap operas.
Kevin is the star and co-creator, along with Michael Slade, of After Forever, the multi Emmy Award-winning digital series that has won critical acclaim not only for its portrayal of gay men in their fifties, but for its unflinching honesty in dealing with loss. In an untimely example of life imitating art, Kevin lost Michael to cancer on Dec. 27, 2020, a few days before the release of Riley’s Unforgettable School Project, a thirty-minute documentary-style stand-alone special that provides a bridge between the end of Season 2 of After Forever and the start of Season 3. Kevin will not only pay tribute to Michael Slade, but talk about the blueprint 3 that Michael left behind for Season 3 of After Forever, once it is safe to resume production of the series. Kevin Spirtas will join us in our second hour.
Both Seasons 1 and 2 of After Forever, as well as Riley’s Unforgettable School Project, are available for streaming on demand on Amazon Prime Video.
This week’s program will also include Part 2 of a conversation with Marc Cushman that began on our last program about Volume 2 of These Are the Voyages: Gene Roddenberry and Star Trek in the 1970s. A three-volume history of Star Trek/biography of Gene Roddenberry, These Are the Voyages: Gene Roddenberry and Star Trek in the 1970s covers the ten years spanning the cancellation of the original series in 1969 and the release of Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979—a period that saw Roddenberry experience many personal and professional ups and downs, while Star Trek itself became a worldwide phenomenon. Volume 2 includes a fascinating account of Roddenberry’s encounter with a group called The Nine, plus a look at the many surprising parallels between Star Trek and Space: 1999—and the great degree to which Isaac Asimov shaped public opinion of the latter. Marc Cushman will join us in our first hour.
Plus: We’ll play highlights from our September 2018 conversation with Emmy Award-winning and Grammy Award-winning writer/producer Geoffrey Mark about the life and career of Ella Fitzgerald. Among other things, we’ll discuss the pivotal stance that Ella took against NBC in 1959, just before an appearance on The Bell Telephone Hour. Geoffrey Mark will join us in our first hour.
Geoff is also the host of Geoffrey Mark Plays Ella, a new hour-long radio program featuring the music of Ella Fitzgerald. The premiere edition of Geoffrey Mark Plays Ella will air this weekend on Metromedia Radio at the following times: Saturday, Feb. 13 at Midnight ET (Friday, Feb. 12 at 9pm PT); Saturday, Feb. 13 at 7pm ET, 4pm PT; Sunday, Feb. 14 at Noon ET, 9am PT; and Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 8am ET, 5am PT.
Also this week: We will pay tribute to our colleague Paul Green with a replay of our conversation from December 2015 about the life and career of Pete Duel. Author of many books on film and television (including Pete Duel: A Biography), and a frequent guest on TV Confidential since the inception of our program, Paul Green passed away on Sunday, Jan. 17 at age sixty-five.
