We can easily spend an entire program hour just talking about the movie career of Nancy Olson Livingston, which includes her Oscar-nominated performance in Sunset Boulevard, one of the greatest films ever made; her starring roles in Pollyanna and The Absent Minded Professor, two of the most successful Disney movies ever made; and her encounters with such screen legends as William Holden, Billy Wilder, Marilyn Monroe, Bing Crosby, and John Wayne. But that would not do justice to the abundant life that Nancy has lived, from her childhood in the American Midwest to spanning the worlds of music, theatre, politics, literature, and the Golden Age of Hollywood.
In 1950, when Sunset Boulevard exploded onto the scene, Nancy had more or less put her career aside to support the efforts of her husband at the time, lyricist Alan Jay Lerner. When her marriage to Lerner fell apart, Nancy’s star was rising again when she met Alan Livingston, head of Capitol Records—and the real love of her life. Along the way she witnessed the creation of some of the greatest works in American theatre (such as My Fair Lady and Gigi), the resurrection of Frank Sinatra’s recording career, the rise of such music stars as Nat King Cole, The Beach Boys, Judy Garland, Henry Mancini, and The Beatles, and several up-close, personal, and—in some cases—awkward encounters with John F. Kennedy.
Nancy’s memoir, A Front Row Seat: An Intimate Look at Broadway, Hollywood, and the Age of Glamour, is a charming chronicle of her life as an actress, wife, mother, and philanthropist that also provides readers with an invitation to a world that few of us will ever enter. Nancy Olson Livingston will join us in our second hour.
Also this week: We’ll bring you an encore presentation of our February 2020 conversation with author, screenwriter, and voice artist Steve Stoliar. Steve’s career in the entertainment industry began in the early 1970s, when a series of events led to a job as the personal secretary and archivist of the one, the only Groucho Marx during the last three years of Groucho’s life—a period of time in which Steve went from being a starry-eyed fan to becoming Groucho’s protector. Steve captures his story in a poignant memoir, Raised Eyebrows: My Years Inside Groucho’s House, which we’ll discuss in our first hour.
