Please join us this New Year’s Eve weekend for an encore presentation of our conversation from February 2022 with Ketty Lester, the Grammy Award-nominated singer/actress known around the world for her international No. 1 hit record from 1962, “Love Letters (Straight from Your Heart),” and for playing schoolteacher Hester Sue Terhune on Little House on the Prairie (pictured left, with Moses Gunn) and Juanita, the wise-cracking cab driver, in the 1972 blaxploitation horror movie Blacula (pictured below, right).
William Crain, the director of Blacula, once told Ketty that she nearly stole the picture from star William Marshall. We’ll ask about Ketty about that, plus we’ll talk about how she came to join the cast of Little House, as well as some of her other film and TV roles. We’ll replay our conversation with Ketty Lester in our second hour.
Ketty’s memoir, Ketty Lester: A Memoir, is the story of how a young girl from Hope, Arkansas—the youngest of fifteen children—not only opened doors for many African-American women, but overcame many obstacles throughout her life, including a recurring battle with epilepsy, with the help of her faith and the values she learned from her parents.
You can follow Ketty Lester on Facebook and at KettyLester.com.
Our first hour will include an encore presentation of our annual New Year’s Eve edition of the Sounds of Lost Television that pays tribute to bandleader Guy Lombardo, the man who was synonymous with New Year’s Eve celebrations for nearly five decades—first on radio, then on network and local television. Phil Gries will bring us “some of the sweetest music this side of Heaven,” plus highlights from vintage Lombardo New Year’s Eve shows—including rarely heard audio of Howard Cosell covering the iconic ball drop at midnight from Times Square, New York.
On behalf of Tony, Donna, Phil, and Greg, our very best wishes to you and your family for a safe, happy, and healthy new year.
