This week’s show will include encore presentations of our April 2021 conversations with entertainment legends Ruta Lee and George Chakiris. Both Ruta and George will take part in a special celebrity authors forum next week at the Hollywood Museum (more on that below).
Ruta Lee’s career as an entertainer spans more than six decades, beginning with the screen versions of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and Witness for the Prosecution—two films that are still considered among the best motion pictures ever made—plus appearances on many of the most popular and beloved TV shows ever made, including The Twilight Zone, The Lucy Show, The Andy Griffith Show, Murder She Wrote, The Fugitive, and Perry Mason. Ruta also co-hosted the game show High Rollers with Alex Trebek—making her one of the first females to host a network TV game show—plus she has hosted several talk shows of her own, and appeared as a panelist on many other game shows, including Match Game, The Dating Game, and The Hollywood Squares. When she wasn’t busy in front of the camera (or appearing in such stage productions as Peter Pan, Hello Dolly, Steel Magnolias, and The Unsinkable Molly Brown), Ruta has worked tirelessly behind the scenes of The Thalians, the first Hollywood charity dedicated to the treatment of mental health patients, and which now also helps our veterans through their partnership with UCLA’s Operation Mend.
Ruta’s memoir, Consider Your Ass Kissed, is the story of how a young girl—the daughter of Lithuanian immigrants—became one of the most legendary entertainers in Hollywood history through hard work and determination. A treasure trove of authentic memories about the Golden Age of Entertainment (including her work opposite such leading men as Clint Eastwood, Burt Reynolds, Charles Bronson, James Garner, Fred Astaire, Robin Williams, Howard Keel, Bob Crane, and Frank Sinatra), Consider Your Ass Kissed also includes the inspiring story of how Ruta convinced Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev to release her 92-year-old Lithuanian grandmother from the Soviet Union in 1964 so that she could live her remaining years in America—and be reunited with her daughter, Ruta’s mother, for the first time in thirty-six years. Ruta Lee will join us in our second hour.
Consider Your Ass Kissed is available right now at Amazon.com. Autographed editions of Ruta’s book are available exclusively at LarryEdmunds.com.
Also this week: We’ll play Part 2 of our conversation with George Chakiris, the Academy Award-winning actor known around the world as Bernardo, the leader of The Sharks, in the iconic 1961 screen adaptation of West Side Story. George will share a few more behind-the-scenes stories about the making of West Side Story, plus we’ll ask him about some of his other notable movie, stage, and TV roles, including starring opposite Elaine Stritch in the national stage production of Company; playing legendary composer and virtuoso pianist Frederic Chopin in the acclaimed PBS miniseries Notorious Woman; and starring opposite Barbara Carrera as Nicholas, Angelica Nero’s scheming cohort, in the “dream season” of Dallas. George Chakiris will join us in our first hour.
My West Side Story: A Memoir by George Chakiris is available in hardcover and as an eBook from Lyons Press and includes a wonderful back cover quote from George’s co-star, dear friend, and fellow Oscar winner from West Side Story, Rita Moreno.
Ruta Lee, George Chakiris, Dee Wallace, Anson Williams, Geri Jewell, John Barbour, Joyce Bulifant, Hank Garrett, and Kathy Garver are among the many celebrities who are scheduled to participate in the Hollywood Museum’s inaugural Celebrity Authors Forum, which will take place Saturday, Dec. 11 from 11am to 4pm. Click here for details and more information.
Also in our first hour: We will pay tribute to Will Ryan, the actor, voice artist, songwriter, and musician who passed away on Friday, Nov. 19 at age 72.
A longtime contributor to Disney films and Walt Disney Records, Will Ryan also starred as Sammy Shooster, opposite Nick Santa Maria as Benny Biffle, in The Misadventures of Biffle and Shooster, the Rondo Award-nominated DVD collection of original, authentically-made, side-splittingly hilarious 1930s-style comedies—written, produced, and directed by Michael Schlesinger—starring the greatest comedy team, Biffle and Shooster, that never actually existed.
Will, Nick, and Mike made several appearances on TV Confidential over the past three years. To honor Will’s memory, this week’s show will feature a replay of one of our favorite segments: A conversation from August 2019 in which Will and Nick not only appeared in character as Biffle and Shooster, but discussed the boys’ often overlooked, but nonetheless significant television career of the 1960s. You’ll be amazed at just how many legendary TV moments that Benny and Sammy almost helped create. Will Ryan and Nick Santa Maria will join us as Biffle and Shooster in our first hour.
