This week’s show will include a return appearance by writer, producer, and author Jay Moriarty. Jay’s career in network television spanned than thirty years, including eight years with Norman Lear and Tandem Productions. Along with his longtime writing partner Mike Milligan, he spent seven of those years writing and producing The Jeffersons, one of the longest-running shows in the entire Norman Lear canon. Jay and Mike’s credits also include “The Draft Dodger,” the famous episode of All in the Family from December 1976 that was recently singled out as one of the fifty most significant episodes of that entire series.
Norman Lear made an important contribution to “The Draft Dodger.” We’ll talk about that, and more, when Jay Moriarty joins us in our second hour.
Jay Moriarty’s memoir, Honky in the House, takes you behind the scenes of not only The Jeffersons, but Tandem Productions in general. His new book, Deadeye, pays homage to Roy Rogers, The Lone Ranger, The Cisco Kid, and other favorite movie and TV cowboys.
Also this week: Phil Rosenzweig will join us for a look back at The Defenders (CBS, 1961-1965), the Emmy Award-winning, highly influential, and sometimes controversial legal drama starring E.G. Marshall and Robert Reed that proved, among other things, that commercial network television and absorbing drama with something to say were not mutually exclusive.
The Defenders was the brainchild of Reginald Rose, one of the first great voices of the Golden Age of Television (along with Rod Serling and Paddy Chayefsky), and a man who knew how to present topical issues and make them accessible to a wide audience. Rose was also the screenwriter and producer of 12 Angry Men, the 1957 film classic starring Henry Fonda that has continued to touch audiences all over the world for its depiction of group dynamics and human relations, while legal scholars have hailed it for its portrayal of ordinary citizens reaching a just verdict.
Phil Rosenzweig is the author of Reginald Rose and the Journey of 12 Angry Men, an excellent book that not only provides the back story of 12 Angry Men, but is the first biography of Reginald Rose himself. Phil’s book includes several chapters that discuss the back story of The Defenders, including the toll that the series took on Rose’s personal life. Phil Rosenzweig will join us in our first hour.
Plus: We’ll welcome Christian Ganiere, the actor who plays Ten on the popular Netflix series Stranger Things. Christian recently experienced the dream of every young actor: His IMDb page skyrocketed practically overnight after his first appearance as Ten last month. Not only that, but Christian told us that being part of the cast of Stranger Things is his dream job. He’ll explain why when he joins us in our first hour.
All four seasons of Stranger Things are available for streaming on demand.
