This week’s program will include a conversation with Emmy Award-winning and Oscar nominated actor Thomas Haden Church (Wings, Sideways, Ned and Stacey, Divorce, Broken Trail, and the Sandman in the Spider-Man movie franchise).
Thomas’ latest film, Acidman, is a character piece about a woman (played by Glee star Dianna Agron) who tracks down her estranged father (played by Thomas) in the Oregon wilderness, where he lives alone with his dog, Migo, and is obsessed with UFOs. Together the father and daughter attempt to make contact with the UFOs—and with each other. Acidman premiered last year at the Tribeca Film Festival; many critics believe that Thomas’ performance in Acidman is the best of his career. We’ll ask him about that, and more, when Thomas Haden Church joins us in our second hour.

Also this week: We will pay tribute to Rita Lakin, the Edgar nominated screenwriter and television pioneer who passed away Thursday, Mar. 23 at age ninety-three. Rita not only created The Rookies, one of Aaron Spelling’s first hit series on ABC, but was one of the very first female script writers and, later, producers in network television, with credits that include such classic shows as The Mod Squad, Dr. Kildare, Peyton Place, and Medical Center, as well as many popular and acclaimed made-for-TV movies. In so doing, Rita also opened a lot of doors for women in television at a time when the industry was run almost entirely by men. Rita’s book The Only Woman in the Room: Episodes from My Life and Career as a Television Writer, a memoir of her twenty-five-years in network television, is essential reading. She was also the author of the Gladdy Gold novels, a popular series of mystery novels featuring a seventy-five-year old female sleuth.
