This week’s program will include a return appearance by Grammy Award-winning singer, actress and songwriter Toni Tennille. Known around the world for her many hit songs with Captain and Tennille, not to mention her successful solo albums that celebrate her love of Big Band music and the Great American Songbook, Toni has also starred in stage productions of such iconic musicals as Victor/Victoria and Mame, while her roots as a performer date back to Toni’s early years as a singer with the Auburn Knights Orchestra in her native Alabama.
Toni Tennille came out of retirement earlier this year to take on another iconic theatre role—matchmaker Dolly Levi—in a brand new production of Hello, Dolly! that will premiere next month at the Yavapai College Performing Arts Center in Prescott, Arizona. Playing Dolly has long been on Toni’s bucket list. We’ll ask her about that, plus she’ll talk about the joyful experience of sharing the stage with more than fifty student performers. Toni Tennille will join us in our second hour.
Toni Tennille will star as Dolly Levi in a lavish production of Jerry Herman’s Hello, Dolly! that will take Thursday, Nov. 3 thru Sunday, Nov. 20 at the Yavapai College Performing Arts Center, 1100 East Sheldon Street in Prescott, Arizona. Also this week: We will welcome Paul Friedman, longtime entertainment executive and the author of a brand new novel, The Unexpected Danny Green. Paul spent more than twenty years creating content for CBS Television, including overseeing on-air promotion for both the CBS News and Entertainment divisions in New York and Los Angeles, before serving as Vice President and Creative Director at CBS Marketing, where he helped launch, and continued to oversee, the marketing campaigns of the three most successful reality show franchises in TV history—Survivor, The Amazing Race, and Big Brother—as well as the on-air campaigns for various CBS network programs and specials, including The Grammy Awards, the Kennedy Center Honors, and the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.
Paul will give us some insight into some of the strategies that go into promoting such high-profile specials as the Grammy Awards telecast, plus we’ll ask him about his debut novel, The Unexpected Danny Green, the inspiring story of an African-American athlete who was born on the wrong side of the tracks, but rises to the top to become a gifted boxer, a published author, and a major Hollywood star. Paul Friedman joins us in our first hour.
Plus: Chuck Harter joins us for a special tribute to Tony Dow, the actor known to three generations of TV audiences as Wally Cleaver on Leave It to Beaver. Tony Dow passed away this past Wednesday, July 27 at age seventy-seven. Chuck interviewed Tony Dow several times for his book Mr. Novak: An Acclaimed Television Series and remained friends with Tony over the rest of his life.
Though best known for his work on both the original Leave It to Beaver and the reunion series The New Leave It to Beaver, Tony Dow had a recurring role on Mr. Novak and considered his experience on that series among the very best of his career. We’ll ask Chuck about that, plus he’ll give us some insight into who Tony was a person. We’ll pay tribute to Tony Dow in our first hour.
