Wink Martindale
Our second hour this week will include an encore presentation of our December 2018 conversation with game show legend Wink Martindale. Synonymous with the word “host,” Wink has not only emceed nineteen game shows over the course of his career—including such popular games as Gambit, Debt, and, of course, Tic Tac Dough—but has produced several others. And while he’s best known for his work in television, Wink also has deep roots in radio, both as a deejay, announcer, talk show host, and recording artist. He had a Gold Record in 1959 for the spoken word recording “Deck of Cards,” while his 2018 spoken word recording, “Heavenly Child,” pays tribute to Elvis Presley.
While some of you probably know about Wink’s long association with Elvis, you may not know that he was there at the very beginning. He was at the station in Memphis, TN on the night when an Elvis Presley record was played on the radio for the very first time, launching a phenomenon that has never stopped. We’ll ask Wink about that, plus he’ll share some memories of hosting Tic Tac Dough, and more.
Wink Martindale also hosts and produces the 100 Greatest Christmas Hits of All Time, an annual countdown that will be heard on hundreds of radio stations across the country on Christmas Day.
Our first hour will include an encore presentation of the special holiday edition of the Sounds of Lost Television with Phil Gries that features audio highlights of select network TV celebrations of the Yuletide season from the 1960s, including programs featuring Florence Henderson, Judy Garland, Jonathan Winters, Danny Thomas, Victor Borge, Jim Nabors, Andy Griffith, Glen Campbell, Dean Martin, Bob Hope, Walter Cronkite, Bing Crosby, Mary Martin, and Charles Kuralt.
