In a film and television career that spans five decades, Basil Hoffman has appeared in two Academy Award-winning Best Pictures (Ordinary People, The Artist), plus he’s worked with fourteen Oscar-winning actors (including Jason Robards, Sophia Loren, Dustin Hoffman, Mary Steenbergen, Renee Zellweger, J.K. Simmons, Timothy Hutton, and Christopher Walken), two Oscar-winning cinematographers, and ten Oscar-winning directors, including Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard, the Coen Brothers, Michel Hazanavicius, Sydney Pollack, and Robert Redford. In fact, Basil is one of just two actors who has worked with Robert Redford four times in his career—twice as an actor, and twice being directed by Redford—while his television credits include appearances in such shows as Seinfeld, Square Pegs, Sanford & Son, The Rockford Files, Columbo, M*A*S*H, The Defenders, Kung Fu, Ellery Queen, Hill Street Blues, and The Practice.

Also a respected acting teacher, Basil Hoffman has taught in venues across the United States and all over the world, plus he has written two highly acclaimed books, Acting and How to Be Good at It and Cold Reading and How to Be Good at It. We’ll talk to Basil about his work as an acting teacher, plus he’ll share a few memories of working with Robert Redford, Sydney Pollack, Carl Reiner, Richard Benjamin, Peter O’Toole, Peter Falk, and more. Basil Hoffman will join us in our second hour.

Basil Hoffman will lead a two-day workshop, Acting and How to Be Good at It, at Clear Light New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Saturday, July 25 and Sunday, July 26. The workshop will focus on the art of the monologue (a monologue is uninterrupted speech by one person). For those who attend the workshop in person, the workshop will follow CDC guidelines with regard to social distancing practices, mask wearing, sanitation, and class sizes. Every actor who attends the workshop will receive a signed copy of Basil’s book Acting and How to Be Good at It. Actors who cannot attend the workshop in person can watch it via Zoom webinar for $99. For details and more information, or to register, go to BasilHoffmanWorkshops.com.

This week’s program will also include Part 1 of a two-part conversation with Suzy Friendly. Suzy spent more than three decades in network television production, working in many behind-the-scenes capacities (both above the line and below the line) on projects that span such genres as variety specials, live telecasts such as the Emmy Awards and the NAACP Image Awards, scripted series (including Maggie Winters and Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper), and sports competition shows like The Superstars and Almost Anything Goes. Among other topics, Suzy will share some memories of working with such luminaries as Academy Award-winning director John Ford, Emmy Award-winning producer Bob Banner, and Emmy-nominated writer/producer Kari Lizer. Suzy Friendly will join us in our first hour.
