Known around the world as Doug and Julie Williams on NBC’s Days of Our Lives, Bill Hayes and Susan Seaforth Hayes know a thing or two about togetherness: They met each other for the first time on the set of Days in 1970; they fell in love and married each other in real life in 1974, while they were still starring on Days (then later saw their characters, Doug and Julie, married on Days in 1976); and they celebrated their forty-seventh wedding anniversary in October 2021.
Bill and Susan are not only still kissing each other, and as full of life and love for each other as when they first met more than fifty years ago, they recently launched a website, SoapOperaSecrets.com, that reveals some of their many secrets for a happy, fulfilling, long lasting, and loving relationship. Bill Hayes and Susan Seaforth Hayes will join us in our second hour.
SoapOperaSecrets.com is a free website that also features clips of Bill and Susan (as Doug and Julie) illustrating the principles of each of their secrets. Sign up for their email list and your will receive an automatic update whenever a new secret is posted.
Bill Hayes and Susan Seaforth Hayes can also be seen in World By the Tail: The Bill Hayes Story, an excellent documentary (which you can enjoy for free at BillHayesMovie.com) that provides a detailed look at Bill’s life and career before he met Susan on Days of Our Lives, which includes starring on Your Show of Shows and other music variety shows in the days of live television; starring in many Broadway productions; and the story of his gold record, “The Ballad of Davy Crockett.” The second half of the film is devoted to Bill’s life with Susan on and off camera over the past fifty years, and the story of how their characters on Days on Our Lives changed during that time. World By The Tail also features anecdotes and remembrances from Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, Shirley Jones, Shirley MacLaine, Florence Henderson, Peter Marshall, Carol Lawrence, Diedre Hall, and many, many others.
Also this week: Playwright and author Jordan Young will join us for a look at the television career of Spike Jones, the legendary bandleader and musical satirist who, if you are a certain age, likely discovered for the first time through The Doctor Demento Show, but whose influence in comedy and satire paved the way for the likes of Monty Python, Jimmy Buffett, George Carlin, Peter Sellers, and, arguably most notably, Weird Al Yankovic. Though best known for his zany live musical comedy revues from the 1940s, Jones embraced television in the 1950s, headlining many series throughout the decade. A creative genius with a fertile mind, Jones had many ideas for television programming—even though the medium itself never quite figured out the best way to put his talents to use.
Jordan Young’s many books on entertainment history include Spike Jones, Off the Record: The Man Who Murdered Music, a comprehensive history and discography of Spike Jones that has been completely updated and reissued with a host of new material, including more than 260 never before published photographs, scripts, arrangements, memorabilia and more. Jordan Young will join us in our first hour.
