An enduring presence in stage, film and television for more than sixty years, Ed Asner established himself as a solid and versatile performer in many top films and TV series throughout the 1960s before becoming a star in his own right as newsman Lou Grant in the 1970s, first on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, then on his own hour-long drama, Lou Grant. Ed earned five of his eight Emmy Awards for playing Lou Grant (three on the Moore Show, two on Lou Grant), making him the only actor to win an Prime Time Emmy Award for playing the same role in both a comedy series and a drama. Also known as the voice of Carl Fredricksen in Pixar’s Up!, and as Santa Claus in the now holiday classic Elf, Ed also won Emmys for his performances in Rich Man, Poor Man, the original Roots and the Canadian drama Forgive Me.

Ed Asner is currently starring as God Almighty in God Help Us, a new stage play in which God moderates a debate between two pundits on opposite sides of the political spectrum. A comedy that speaks to audiences of all political persuasions, God Help Us will make you laugh and make you think, while also offering hope for the future, provided that we all listen to each other. We’ll ask Ed what it’s like to play God (literally), plus we’ll ask him what inspired him to start The Ed Asner Family Center, a nonprofit organization that benefits children with special needs; the differences between playing God and playing Santa Claus; and, of course, a few questions about The Mary Tyler Moore Show. We’ll also talk about some of his other upcoming projects in 2019. Ed Asner will join us in our second hour.

For more information on God Help Us, including how to book the play to a playhouse near you, go to GodHelpUs.net.

Ed Asner will also bring his critically acclaimed one-man show A Man and His Prostate to the Town Hall Theatre in Lafayette, California on Friday, Jan. 11, 2019; the B Street Theatre in Sacramento, California on  Friday, Feb. 1, 2019; and The Wealthy Theatre in Grand Rapids, Michigan on Sunday, Mar. 10. 2019. For more information on A Man and His Prostate and other upcoming performances, go to AManandHisProstate.com.

Our first hour will include Part 2 of our conversation with Leslie Bertram Crane about her career in television production and post-production. After working behind the scenes on such variety shows and live television events as Star Search, The American Music Awards, the Jerry Lewis MDA telethon, and two Academy Awards broadcasts, Leslie became as a “switcher” for top-rated comedy shows as Murphy Brown, Friends, and The Drew Carey Show on the nights when those shows were taped before a live audience. We will find out what a switcher does, plus we’ll ask Leslie about her experience as post-production supervisor on such shows as ER and Third Watch, and her experience working on Roundhouse and On the Television, two of the first original series produced by Nickelodeon.

Leslie Bertram Crane is also co-author, along with her husband Robert Crane, of Burn the Ice, a book detailing the adventures of two bartenders in Los Angeles.
