The son of Academy Award-winning director George Stevens, George Stevens Jr. worked closely with his father on the sets of A Place in the Sun, Shane, The Diary of Anne Frank, and Giant—four bona fide film classics that all continue to stand the test of time—while also establishing his own career in film and television, including directing episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Peter Gunn, and The D.A.’s Man, and working with Jack Webb behind the scenes of The D.I. George was working with his dad on production of The Greatest Story Ever Told when a unique opportunity to work with legendary broadcaster Edward R. Murrow brought him to Washington, D.C. at the outset of the John F. Kennedy administration. That journey not only changed the course of George’s life, but changed the course of film history in the United States through George’s efforts with the American Film Institute—which George founded in 1967 and led to the restoration of thousands of endangered motion pictures, while also training a new generation of filmmakers, including David Lynch and Terence Malick.
George Stevens Jr. also created the Kennedy Center Honors to recognize the accomplishments of distinguished artists in film, television, and music. He also wrote, produced, and directed many distinguished TV-movies and TV miniseries during the third act of his career, including Separate But Equal starring Sidney Poitier.
George’s memoir, My Place in the Sun: Life in the Golden Age of Hollywood and Washington, is available now wherever books are sold. George Stevens Jr. will join us in our second hour.
Also joining us this week will be Cable Ace Award-winning actor and voice artist Stuart Pankin (Dinosaurs, Not Necessarily the News, The San Pedro Beach Bums). Though we often think of Stu for his many comedic roles, he has a host of dramatic parts among his credits, including Michael Douglas’ best friend in Fatal Attraction and his latest film, Deep in the Forest, a political thriller written, produced, and directed by Jeremy Lanni that becomes available for streaming on demand on Tuesday, May 31.
A collaboration between Jim Henson Productions and producer Michael Jacobs, Dinosaurs posed a challenge for the voice actors who worked on the show because they had to match their voices with the movements of the Jim Henson puppets first, instead of the other way around. We’ll ask Stu about that, plus we’ll talk about Deep in the Forest and learn how Stu’s experience on The San Pedro Beach Bums fomented an important professional relationship that eventually led to his roles on Not Necessarily the News, No Soap Radio, and Dinosaurs. Stuart Pankin will join us in our first hour.
Plus: We will celebrate the shows of Sid & Marty Krofft Productions will an encore presentation of our November 2018 conversation with iconic television producer Marty Krofft. Marty is scheduled to appear this weekend at the first ever Krofft Kon, which will take place Saturday, May 21 at the Orinda Theatre in Orinda, California. Butch Patrick (Lidsville), Wesley Eure and Kathy Coleman (Land of the Lost), Johnnie Whitaker (Sigmund and the Sea Monsters), Sharon Baird (H.R. Pufnstuf, Land of the Lost, Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, Lidsville), and Christopher Knight (The Brady Bunch Hour) are also scheduled to appear the day. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door. See KrofftKon.com for more information.
