This week’s program will include encore presentations of our December 2020 conversations with actors Louis Gossett Jr., Burt Ward, Hank Garrett, and James DuMont.
One of the most distinguished actors of our lifetime, Louis Gossett Jr. is also one of the few actors to have won both an Academy Award and an Emmy Award, earning the Oscar for his performance as gunnery sergeant Emil Foley in An Officer and a Gentleman, and the Emmy for his performance as Fiddler in the groundbreaking miniseries Roots. Lou’s acting career spans nearly seventy years and is still going strong today. Fans of HBO’s Watchmen know him as Will Reeves, the true identity of the masked vigilante Hooded Justice, plus he has three movies out right now—one of which, The Reason, is particularly timely as we approach the seasons of Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa. Louis Gossett Jr. will join us in our second hour.
Louis Gossett Jr. plays Pastor Jim, a blind man who befriends a drifter who appears to have miraculous powers, in The Reason, a faith-based film that is now available on DVD and as a digital release. Lou also plays the title character in The Cuban, an award-winning independent film about a renowned musician with dementia who rekindles his spirit after befriending a nurse at his care home, plus he stars opposite Matthew Modine in Foster Boy, an award-winning legal drama, executive produced by Shaquille O’Neal, that brings to light many of the inequities of our foster care system. Both Foster Boy and The Cuban are available for viewing on demand on all major streaming platforms.
Our second hour will also include Part 2 of our conversation with Burt Ward, the actor known around the world as Robin the Boy Wonder on Batman (ABC, 1966-1968). As calendar year 2021 marks the fifty-fifth anniversary of the premiere of Batman, Burt will share some memories of working with Adam West, Julie Newmar, Batman writer Stanley Ralph Ross, and more.
Burt Ward—along with his wife Tracy—have been real-life super heroes to dogs and cats of all sizes and breeds for more than twenty-six years, advocating for the care and nutrition of our four-legged friends through their nonprofit organization, Gentle Giants Rescue. Gentle Giants has a line of all-natural pet products for dogs and cats that will help maximize both the life span and quality of life of your animal. Dogs who eat Gentle Giants Dog Food, and who follow the special Gentle Giants feeding and care program, have enjoyed healthy, active life spans of up to twenty-seven years with a wonderful quality of life. Gentle Giants pet products are available in more than 1,100 Target stories throughout the U.S., as well as more than 2,400 Walmart stores throughout the U.S. and more than 400 Walmart stores throughout Canada. You can also order them directly at GentleGiantsDogFood.com or GentleGiantsPetProducts.com. Gentle Giants Rescue is a nonprofit organization; all sales of Gentle Giants products go directly to the rescue. Burt and Tracy take no salary, nor make any money, from the sales of their pet products or from the rescue.
Also this week: We welcome back Hank Garrett, the actor that Baby Boomers around the world know as Officer Nicholson on Car 54, Where Are You? Hank’s career as an entertainer spans more than sixty-five years and covers many genres. An accomplished stand-up comedian, he was the opening act for Tony Bennett for many years, plus he has performed countless benefits that support our disabled veterans. Also a prolific voice artist (heard on many animated shows and specials), he even wrestled professionally early in his career.
Besides Officer Nicholson on Car 54, Hank has played many other police officers or detectives in movies and on television, including Harry and Tonto, Three Days of the Condor, The Boys Next Door, The Jazz Singer with Neil Diamond and Laurence Olivier, Paris with James Earl Jones, and Columbo with Peter Falk. Not only that, he was also once an actual police officer with the New York City police department. That’s kind of ironic, considering that Hank grew up running rough shod in the toughest streets of Harlem, New York. By all accounts, Hank would’ve ended up either dead or in prison before he was thirteen years old, where if not for the intervention of several angels in his life… one of whom happened to be Sammy Davis Jr. Hank Garrett will join us in our first hour.
Hank’s memoir, From Harlem Hoodlum to Hollywood Heavyweight, is available through Briton Publishing, Amazon.com, and other online retailers.
Our first hour will also include a return visit from versatile film and TV actor James DuMont (The Righteous Gemstones, Spenser: Confidential). James plays Mike Ferro in Safety, a new drama from Disney+ that is now available from streaming on demand. He can also be seen in The Underground Railroad, the highly anticipated miniseries that is now available from Amazon Prime Video.
