If you watch The Simpsons, you know Harry Shearer as the longtime voice of Mr. Burns, Ned Flanders, Smithers, and many, many other characters. If you’re a fan of This is Spinal Tap, you know Harry as bass player Derek Smalls, a character that Harry has played both in the 1984 movie and on The Simpsons, as well as performed live in many venues around the world. An accomplished screenwriter, novelist, filmmaker, and director, as well as a skilled impressionist and comedian, Harry has a long list of other film and TV credits, including A Mighty Wind, The Truman Show, The Fisher King, Saturday Night Live (both as a writer and as a performer), Fernwood Tonight, Real Life (co-screenwriter), The Right Stuff, Portrait of a White Marriage (director), Small Soldiers, Teddy Bears’ Picnic (director), Nixon’s the One (creator, writer, and star), and The Big Uneasy, the award-winning documentary from 2010 that he wrote and directed.
Also an accomplished radio broadcaster, Harry Shearer is the host of Le Show, a weekly, hour-long romp through the worlds of media, politics, sports, and show business that also includes an eclectic mix of music selections. December 2021 marks the 38th anniversary of the premiere of Le Show. We’ll ask Harry how Le Show came to be, plus we’ll talk about the origins of Spinal Tap, and more. Harry Shearer will join us in our second hour. Chuck Harter will co-host this segment.
You can hear Le Show every week on NPR stations and Continental Public Radio stations throughout the U.S. and worldwide. It is also available for listening on demand as a podcast through many platforms, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and HarryShearer.com.
This week’s show will also feature stage, film, and television actor Tony Winters. Cable TV audiences know Tony as Clive, the owner of the High Yellow Restaurant, on the critically acclaimed OWN series Queen Sugar, while fans of the HBO series Silicon Valley know him as the principled Mayor Wilkins. Tony’s other TV credits include This is Us, Shameless, Black Monday, and, most recently, Young Sheldon, while gamers know him as the hard-as-nails Assistant Coach in the bestselling videogames NBA 2K 15 and NBA 2K 16.
Tony will be seen in the pilot of the new Showtime series Yellowjackets, which premieres on Sunday, Nov. 14. He also recently made his directorial debut in an episode of Two Degrees: The Series, plus he has a key role as an NCAA executive in the feature motion National Champions, which opens in theaters on Wednesday, Nov. 24. Tony Winters will join us in our second hour.
Also this week: We will play Part 2 of a conversation that began last week with actor, author, and publisher James Rosin. Jim’s books include behind-the-scenes oral histories of Naked City, Peyton Place, Route 66, The Streets of San Francisco, Quincy, and other great shows from the 1960s and 1970s. He also recently published The Many Faces of Nehemiah, the memoirs of his cousin Nehemiah Persoff, one of the greatest and most versatile character actors of the twentieth century.
We’ll talk more about Persoff’s stage, film, and television career. We’ll also ask Jim about two of his other new releases, the novellas Butterfly and Belle Garden Beat. James Rosin will join us in our first hour.
