Known to television audiences around the world as Valene Ewing on both Knots Landing (CBS, 1979-1993) and Dallas (CBS, 1978-1991), Joan Van Ark began her professional acting career opposite Hume Cronyn and Zoe Caldwell in the Minneapolis Guthrie Theater production of Moliere’s The Miser, followed by the Guthrie production of Death of a Salesman (starring Cronyn and Jessica Tandy). After a season at the Arena Stage theatre in Washington, D.C., she caught the attention of director Mike Nichols, who cast her opposite Richard Benjamin in the national touring company of Barefoot in the Park. Van Ark earned a Tony nomination for her performance in The School for Wives and won the Theater World Award for The Rules of the Game. Also an accomplished voice artist, Joan did national radio and TV spots for Estee Lauder for many years, plus she’s been heard in many film and TV animated productions—including the voices of both Jessica Drew and Spider-Woman on Spider-Woman (ABC, 1979), the first TV adaptation of a female superhero from the Marvel Comics universe. All sixteen episodes of Spider-Woman are now available on demand on Disney+.
2019-2020 marks the fortieth anniversary of the premieres of both Knots Landing and Spider-Woman. We’ll talk to Joan about that, plus we’ll chat about her stage background; the “bag of voices” that she draws on as a voice artist; the advice that James Garner once gave Joan early in her career; and more. Joan Van Ark will join us in our second hour.

The Hollywood Museum recently launched a new lobby exhibit honoring the fortieth anniversary of Knots Landing that features some of the costumes worn by Joan Van Ark, Michele Lee, and Donna Mills on the beloved CBS series. The latest addition to the Museum’s popular ongoing Lobby Series that honors legendary entertainers and iconic TV series, the Knots Landing lobby exhibit is on display through Wednesday, April 1. For more information, go to TheHollywoodMuseum.com.
Also this week: We will play Part 2 of a conversation that began last week with author, screenwriter, and voice artist Steve Stoliar. Steve’s career in the entertainment industry began in the early 1970s, when a series of events led to a job as the personal secretary and archivist of the one, the only Groucho Marx during the last three years of Groucho’s life—a period of time in which Steve went from being a starry-eyed fan to becoming Groucho’s protector. Steve captures his story in a poignant memoir, Raised Eyebrows: My Years Inside Groucho’s House, which we’ll discuss in our first hour.
