Most of you know Richard Benjamin for his many roles on the Broadway stage, as well as such films as The Sunshine Boys (for which he won a Golden Globe Award), Goodbye, Columbus, Diary of a Mad Housewife, Westworld, Love at First Bite, Portnoy’s Complaint, Catch-22, and The Last of Sheila, and for his efforts as a director, which include such popular films as My Favorite Year, The Money Pit, and Mermaids. But he has also done a lot of television throughout his career, including He and She (CBS, 1967-1968), the critically acclaimed sitcom that co-starred Richard’s wife, Paula Prentiss; and Quark (NBC, 1978), the short-lived, but fondly remembered satire of Star Wars, Star Trek, and science fiction in general that also marked one of Richard’s many collaborations with his longtime friend and colleague Buck Henry. Richard Benjamin will join us in our second hour.
Also joining us this week will be Golden Globe Award-winning and three-time Oscar nominee Dyan Cannon. Known for her performances in such films as Heaven Can Wait, Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, Honeysuckle Rose, The Anderson Tapes, and The Last of Sheila, Dyan likewise has a lot of TV in her background, including early roles in such classic series as Wanted: Dead or Alive, Gunsmoke, and many of the early shows produced by Warner Bros. Television, as well as later in her career on Ally McBeal (as Judge “Whipper” Cone) and, more recently, the Pure Flix comedy series Mood Swings. Dyan will soon be seen in the family drama Hope’s Legacy (the sequel to Christmas Ranch), plus she is working on a musical adaptation of her best-selling memoir, Dear Cary. Dyan Cannon will join us in our first hour.
Richard Benjamin and Dyan Cannon will appear at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday, January 26 following a special screening of The Last of Sheila (1973), the clever murder mystery also starring James Mason, James Coburn, and Raquel Welch that plays very much like a game. Written by Anthony Perkins and Steven Sondheim, The Last of Sheila has also been cited as the inspiration for the contemporary whodunit Knives Out. The January 26 event begins with a pre-screening reception at 5:30pm. The Last of Sheila will then be shown at 6:30pm, with a live discussion with Richard Benjamin, Dyan Cannon, and film historian Foster Hirsch immediately following the screening. For tickets and more information, go to AmericanCinemathequeCalendar.com.
Plus: We will welcome film and TV actor Massi Furlan, the “go-to” guy for European crime roles over the past decade, including appearances in Star Trek, The Dark Knight Rises, Keeping Up with the Joneses, NCIS: Los Angeles, Truce, The Last Ship, American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace, and, most recently, as Switchblade in Jumanji: The Next Level and the villainous Lee Taglin in Bad Boys for Life. Though known for playing bad guys on camera, Massi is a renaissance man off-camera, with a background that includes stand-up comedy, a time working as a chef, and a stint flying helicopters in the Italian Army. Massi Furlan will join us in our first hour.
Bad Boys for Life and Jumanji: The Next Level are both playing in theaters everywhere.
