Emmy Award-winning actor, producer, and “cultural architect” Robert Hooks will join us for Part 2 of a conversation that began last month about his career in stage, film, and television. Founder of three significant African-American theatre companies—the Group Theatre Workshop in New York; the DC Black Repertory Company in his hometown of Washington, D.C.; and the internationally recognized Negro Ensemble Company in New York—Robert became the first African-American actor to star in a network TV drama when he was cast as police detective Jeff Ward on N.Y.P.D. (ABC, 1967-1969), the first TV cop show with the official imprimatur of the New York Police Department, and the first network series to portray an African-American police officer as one of its regular characters.
This week, we’ll ask Robert about some of his other notable film and TV roles, including Admiral Morrow, the commander of Starfleet, in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, and private eye “Mr. T” in the classic 1972 blaxploitation movie Trouble Man. Robert Hooks will join us in our second hour; Chuck Harter, who arranged for Robert’s appearance, will be our special co-host.
This week’s show will also include Part 2 of our conversation with award-winning writer, director, and Star Trek historian Mark Cushman. Marc’s latest book, These Are the Voyages: Gene Roddenberry and Star Trek in the 1970s, is the first of a two-volume biography that chronicles the career of the Great Bird of the Galaxy between the cancellation of the original Star Trek in 1969 and the release of Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979. Among other topics this week, Marc will take us behind the scenes of The Questor Tapes, the critically acclaimed series pilot that many consider to be Roddenberry’s best work (other than Star Trek). Marc Cushman will join us in our first hour.
Volume I of These Are the Voyages, Marc Cushman’s critically acclaimed three-volume history of the original Star Trek, is now available as an audiobook.
Plus: We’ll bring you special coverage from the floor of The Hollywood Museum, including our interviews with some of the special guests who attended the opening night festivities of the new Remembering Lucy exhibit.
