Robin Williams’ regular director during the first three seasons of Mork & Mindy, Howard Storm has known what “funny” is since he was two years old. His father was a vaudevillian and a burlesque comic, while Howard himself began his showbiz career when he was a teenager, performing in nightclubs in New York in the 1950s—where he either crossed paths with or worked alongside such legends as Jack Carter, Jan Murray, Shecky Greene, Lenny Bruce, Betty Garrett, Phil Foster, Joan Rivers, Judy Garland and Woody Allen—then later performing improv in the late ’60s and early 1970s as a member of The Committee along with Peter Bonerz and Howard Hesseman. Howard also worked steadily as an actor in movies and TV throughout the 1960s before becoming one of the most sought-after directors in television, including such popular shows as Laverne & Shirley, Everybody Loves Raymond, Kenan and Kel, Fish, Daddy Dearest, Rhoda, ALF, Angie, and nearly sixty episodes of Mork & Mindy.

Television writer and director Howard Storm

After decades of regaling colleagues and friends with stories of his colorful background growing up in one of the toughest neighborhoods in the Lower East Side of New York, Howard Storm has just released his memoirs, called The Imperfect Storm: From Henry Street to Hollywood. Howard Storm will join us in our second hour.

Joining Howard in our second hour will be our friend Steve Stoliar. Author of Raised Eyebrows: My Years Inside Groucho’s House, Steve was Howard’s collaborator on The Imperfect Storm.

Also this week: Tony Figueroa and Donna Allen will pay tribute to actor and entrepreneur Lyle Waggoner (The Carol Burnett Show, Wonder Woman) as part of This Week in TV History.
