One of the best rock photographers of his generation, David Arnoff is particularly known among followers of the punk rock and underground music scene. In many respects, however, David’s interest in music—and, particularly, the music of British bands—was shaped by the pop music TV shows that he watched as a teenager in the 1960s, including Shindig, Hullabaloo and The Lloyd Thaxton Show. We will ask David about that, plus he’ll share a few stories about watching The Beatles play at Dodger Stadium in 1966, meeting Boyce and Hart and Davy Jones of The Monkees by accident, and how a lot of punk artists, such as Johnny Thunders and The Heartbreakers, were fans of such shows as The Honeymooners and The Untouchables. David Arnoff will join us in our first hour.

David’s book, Shot in the Dark: The Collected Photography of David Arnoff, is a collection of more than 150 black and white photographs, circa 1976 to 1985, of such punk rock performers as Patti Smith, The Clash, Blondie, Nick Cave, Lydia Lunch, X, The Damned, Ian Dury, Misfits, The Ramones, The Cramps, Lux Interior, Poison Ivy, David Johansen, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joan Jett, and Elvis Costello—all in their prime and, in many cases, before they become well known to the public. The British publication Photo Monitor describes Shot in the Dark as “a mixture of anarchic live photographs, in-your-face portraits and plenty of ad hoc documentation, all shrouded in high contrast and dark shadows,” adding that the presentation of the book resembles “a neo-gothic thriller set against the contrasting background of the always-sunny California; mirroring the dark side of the City of Angels, where the ghouls depicted revel in their depravity and debauchery once the sun goes down.” Shot in the Dark also includes personal insights and eyewitness accounts from many of the artists photographed in the book, including Motorhead, Nick Cave, X, Jayne/Wayne County, Walter Lure, and The Dead Boys, plus a conversation between David Arnoff and Lydia Lunch.

Chuck Harter will also join us this week for Part 2 of our look at the era of pop music TV shows from the mid to late 1960s. These shows broke the mold in television not only because they featured popular music acts every week, but because they were specifically programmed for young viewers. This week we’ll focus on such syndicated pop music shows such as The Lloyd Thaxton Show, Shebang (with Casey Kasem), Hollywood a Go Go (aka Ninth Street West), Shivaree, and Groovy.
