First hour: Ed and Greg welcome esteemed film critic and film historian Leonard Maltin (Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide, Leonard Maltin’s Classic Movie Guide). The Los Angeles City Council recently honored Leonard by declaring this past Tuesday, April 24 as Leonard Maltin Day in Los Angeles. Topics include the origins of his annual Movie Guide, plus some memories of Leonard’s friend Chuck McCann, why the term “instant classic” is an oxymoron, and how he still gets excited when talking to movie stars for his weekly podcast, Maltin on Movies. Also in this hour: Tony, Donna and Ed remember the iconic “Puppy Episode” of Ellen, which originally aired during This Week in TV History. Second hour: Ed welcomes character actor Joseph Lyle Taylor (Justified, Sneaky Pete, The Glamour of It All). Topics include Joe’s approach to playing heavies such as Frank Hooper on Sneaky Pete, his work with Spike Lee and Prince, and how Joe’s experience as a writer often helps him as an actor. Also this week: An encore edition of The Sounds of Lost Television that includes a 1963 interview with baseball Hall of Famer Willie Mays.
