George Chakiris: My West Side Story
Original Airdates: Mar. 26-28, 2021
TVC 532.5: Ed welcomes George Chakiris, the Academy Award-winning and Golden Globe Award-winning actor known around the world as Bernardo, the leader of The Sharks, in the iconic 1961 screen adaptation of West Side Story. George’s memoir, My West Side Story, not only is the story of his life and career on stage, screen, and television, but reveals, for the first time, the inside story of how West Side Story evolved from a conversation between Jerome Robbins, Arthur Laurents, and Leonard Bernstein in Robbins’ Manhattan apartment in 1949 to becoming the cinematic and theatrical landmark that continues to dazzle audiences more than seventy years later. Topics this segment include some of the subtle differences between the stage version of West Side Story and the iconic motion picture, as well as George’s experience playing Riff in the London West End stage production of West Side Story before he was cast as Bernardo in the movie.
