Emmy Award-winning writer, producer, director, playwright, and author Joseph Dougherty (thirtysomething, Pretty Little Liars, Saving Grace, Chester Bailey) will join us this week for a special roundtable discussion devoted to Columbo, including the original NBC series (1971-1978); Prescription: Murder, the play by Richard Levinson and William Link that begat Columbo (and which eventually led to the two Columbo pilots, Prescription: Murder and Ransom for a Dead Man); the often unheralded contributions by screenwriter Jackson Gillis (including the memorable climax to “Suitable for Framing”); how the ABC revival (1989-2003) holds up, compared to the original series; and how Columbo evolved from a mystery series that emphasized clues and detection to a character show that often played up the idiosyncrasies of both the Columbo character and Peter Falk himself.

Also joining us on the panel will be David Koenig, author of Shooting Columbo: The Lives and Deaths of TV’s Rumpled Detective, writer/producer Dan Farren (Story Salon), and Tony Figueroa of This Week in TV History. We’ll talk Columbo beginning in our second hour.

Shooting Columbo is available in hardcover, as an eBook, and as an audiobook through Amazon.com. Joseph Dougherty’s new book, A Screenwriter’s Companion, is now available for pre-order through Amazon.com and Fayetteville Mafia Press.

Also this week: Film historian Andrew Erish will join us for a conversation about The Vitagraph Company, the first major motion picture studio in the United States, and a company that established many norms of movie making as we know it today (such as the full length feature motion picture), not to mention many genres of movies that have since been adapted by television (including detective stories and situation comedies).

From 1897 to 1925, Vitagraph not only produced about 3,500 movies, but originated both the star system and the division of specialized labor and craftspeople that movie makers take for granted; cast women and minorities in major movie roles; created many innovative techniques that are still used today; and developed many fundamental aspects of the movie business as we know it today, including the concept of limited releases in select cities a few weeks before widespread distribution.

Vitagraph was the leading producer of motion pictures throughout much of the silent movie era, yet today it is virtually forgotten. Andrew Erish will explain why when he joins us in our first hour.

Vitagraph: America’s First Great Motion Picture Studio by Andrew Erish is available wherever books are sold.
