Most of you probably know Ketty Lester as schoolteacher Hester Sue Terhune on Little House on the Prairie—a character that Ketty played for six years, and the only African-American schoolteacher depicted on that series—as well as her appearances in such films and TV series as Days of Our Lives, Julia, Uptight, Brewster Place, Sanford and Son, Harry O, The FBI, House Party 3, the cult classic Black horror movie Blacula (as the wise-cracking cab driver), and her very first appearance on network television, on Groucho Marx’s You Bet Your Life. Some of you, however, know Ketty Lester for her career as a recording artist. She not only sang in nightclubs across the U.S., Canada, and the UK, but had an international No. 1 record, “Love Letters (Straight from the Heart),” that is still being played around the world on many, many platforms.

Ketty Lester opened a lot of doors as an artist, both as an actress and as a singer. She is also a devout woman of faith who is grateful for the many angels who opened doors for her throughout her life and career—among whom included Maya Angelou, Oprah Winfrey, and Michael Landon. Ketty Lester will join us in our first hour.

Ketty’s memoir, Ketty Lester: A Memoir, is the story of how a young girl from Hope, Arkansas—the youngest of fifteen children—not only opened doors for many African American women, but overcame many obstacles throughout her life, including a recurring battle with epilepsy, with the help of her faith and the values she learned from her parents.

For our listeners in Los Angeles: You can meet Ketty Lester at the Hollywood Heritage Museum, 2100 N. Highland Ave. in Hollywood, CA on Sunday, Feb. 20 beginning at 2pm. Ketty will share stories of her life and career in a conversation with Alison Arngrim, while veteran comedian and ventriloquist Willie Tyler and Motown recording artist Blinky Williams are also scheduled to appear. Copies of Ketty’s memoir and her CDs will also be available. For tickets and more information, go to the events page at HollywoodHeritage.org. You can follow Ketty Lester on Facebook and at KettyLester.com.

This week’s program will also include an encore presentation of our April 2012 conversation with singer/actress Linda Lawson. After beginning her career as a nightclub performer at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas—an experience that led her to record an album with Henry Mancini—Linda Lawson embarked on an acting career that included appearances on such popular series as Peter Gunn, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Sea Hunt, Adventures in Paradise (as Renee, the nightclub owner), Maverick (in “Duel at Sundown,” the famous episode with Clint Eastwood), 77 Sunset Strip, M Squad, The Virginian, It Takes a Thief, and ER, as well as such feature motion pictures as Night Tide (with Dennis Hopper), Apache Rifles (with Audie Murphy) and Sometimes a Great Notion (with Paul Newman and Henry Fonda). Linda discusses her experiences in old Hollywood, old Las Vegas, and the early days of television in our second hour.
