The voice of Porky Pig since March 1990—not to mention the voice of countless other animated characters on various TV series, movies and videogames—Bob Bergen is a living breathing reminder that, with hard work, determination and a little luck here and there, you really can make your childhood dreams come true.

As a kid, Bob spent hours upon hours watching and taping cartoons, imitating voices as well as creating characters of his own. His dream was to voice The Looney Tunes—and, in particular, Porky Pig. Bob’s idol was Mel Blanc, and he worked day and night trying to perfect eh-puh-peh-eh Porky’s famous voice. Then, when Bob was fourteen, his family moved to Los Angeles. There, Bob devoted himself to learning how to break into the voiceover industry (specifically, how to get into the world of doing voices for cartoons). Before long, he found himself taking voice-over classes from such legendary voice artists as Daws Butler, Louise Chamis, Michael Bell, Brian Cummings, and Dave Madden. Then, when Bob was eighteen, a family connection brought him to the attention of Casey Kasem. Kasem offered Bob his assistance, asking only one thing in return: That, one day, Bob return to other young artists the generosity that was shown to him.

We’ll talk about the generosity of the voice artist community, Bob’s friendship with voice legend June Foray, how he came to meet his idol, Mel Blanc, and more when Bob Bergen joins us in our second hour.

Besides being one of the most respected working voice actors in the industry today, Bob Bergen is also an accomplished voice teacher. He is in his thirty-first year teaching his animation voice workshop in Los Angeles. He also travels the U.S. and Canada teaching weekend voiceover workshops, plus he offers private sessions. If you are interested in voice over work, contact Bob through his website.

This week’s show will also include a return appearance by actress Lili Bordán. Known for playing for a wide range of characters for many genres, Lily is one of the stars of The Nun, the highly anticipated horror movie that opens in theaters everywhere on Friday, Sept. 7.

Earlier this year, Lili had a supporting role in the romantic comedy Book Club (now available on DVD and for streaming on demand), where she worked alongside Mary Steenburgen and had an opportunity to meet one of her idols, Diane Keaton. Later this year, she’ll be seen as Warner Bros. story editor Irene Lee in Curtiz, the upcoming biopic about Casablanca director Michael Curtiz that premiered last week at the Montreal World Film Festival. Lili Bordán will join us in our first hour.

Also this week: Geoffrey Mark will share the back stories of some of the songs featured on the long-awaited two-CD set that accompanies his latest book, Ella: A Biography of the Legendary Ella Fitzgerald, including Ella’s many collaborations with Louis Armstrong (and, particularly, what Satchmo used to whisper in her ear before the start of each song they performed). Geoffrey Mark will join us in our first hour.

Geoffrey Mark will perform some of the songs of Ella Fitzgerald on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at the Santa Monica Public Library. The Deluxe Edition of Ella: A Biography of the Legendary Ella Fitzgerald includes a two-CD set with thirty-nine tracks of Ella in her prime.
