Best known among TV audiences as Marsha Owens on the long-running ABC comedy Mr. Belvedere, Grammy nominated singer/actress Ilene Graff made her Broadway debut as the understudy for Jill O’Hara in Promises Promises, Neil Simon’s musical adaptation of The Apartment. Ilene sang backups from the orchestra pit and performed the role of Fran Kubelik in New York a dozen times before starring in the national tour. She also played Sandy in the original Broadway production of Grease, plus she was the original Cleo in the Broadway production of I Love My Wife.
Ilene Graff continues to perform on stage and in cabaret venues across the country, including an upcoming appearance at Feinstein’s at Vitello’s later this fall. She also runs a vocal performance workshop, Making the Song Your Own, that offers students an opportunity to sing every week in a stress-free atmosphere while also learning important techniques that they can apply whether they want to pursue a career in musical theater, cabaret, jazz, pop, or just sing for the fun of it. We’ll ask Ilene about her workshops, plus she’ll tell us how to perform the “Star-Spangled Banner” (and make it sound like your own), as well as share a few memories of her years on Mr. Belvedere. Ilene Graff will join us in our second hour.
The fall semester for Making the Song Your Own is currently full. However, if you’re in Los Angeles, you can sign up for the next workshop, which will likely take place in the spring of 2020. Students of all ages and experiences are welcome. To learn more about Making the Song Your Own, go to IleneGraff.com or the Making the Song Your Own page on Facebook.
Also this week: We will welcome Lynette Rice, editor at large for Entertainment Weekly. Lynette recently wrote an excellent piece for the September issue of Entertainment Weekly that looks back at the circumstances surrounding the murder of Hogan’s Heroes star Bob Crane on June 29, 1978, a still unsolved mystery that has spawned five books, three investigations, the 2002 movie Auto Focus, and four decades of speculation. Lynette’s story particularly focuses on how the aftermath of the case continues to impact Crane’s family and the community of Scottsdale, Arizona. Lynette Rice will join us in our first hour.
