The eldest son of iconic comedian Richard Pryor and his first wife, Patricia Watts, Richard Pryor Jr. is a man whose self-described “freakish life” paralleled that of his famous father in more ways than you can imagine—including being raised in a whorehouse in Peoria, Illinois to overcoming physical abuse, verbal abuse, bouts with alcohol and drug addiction, struggles with his true sexual identity, and frequent bad decisions. Being the son of a celebrity, Richard also struggled with something that few people can ever really understand: wondering whether people liked him for who he was, or because of who his father was.
Through it all, however, Richard Pryor Jr. not only overcame these obstacles, but thrived. He continues to perform today, while also serving as an inspiration to those who have struggled with addiction or survived abusive relationships. Richard shares his life story in a new book, In a Pryor Life, which we’ll tell you about when he joins us in our second hour.
For our listeners in the Midwest, Richard Pryor Jr. will appear at the Bradley University Student Center Atrium in Peoria, Illinois on Wednesday, April 10 beginning at 4pm and at the Olde Town Tap in Altoona, Iowa on Friday, April 12, also beginning at 4pm. For more information on these events, or to book Richard for a future event, go to InAPryorLife.com.
This week’s show will also include a return appearance by actress and entrepreneur Audrey Walters. Audrey can be currently seen in Walk. Ride. Rodeo, the new Netflix original motion picture that is based on the inspiring story of Amberley Snyder, the teenage champion barrel racer who became paralyzed from the waist down due to a near fatal car accident, only to defy the odds and return to racing less than a year after her accident.
Audrey has a supporting role in Walk. Ride. Rodeo, but in a way, her character is pivotal. We’ll tell you what we mean by that, plus we’ll talk about some of Audrey’s other film and TV projects, plus the latest developments behind Talk to the Camera, the youth workshop that Audrey co-founded, which helps elementary and middle school children develop their social communication skills. Audrey Walters will also join us in our second hour.
Plus: Phil Gries will join us for a special edition of The Sounds of Lost Television that will spotlight the short-lived but critically acclaimed version of The Merv Griffin Show that aired on NBC daytime between October 1962 and March 1963—a show that not only brought a Tonight Show sensibility to two o’clock in the afternoon, but won approval from critics, intellectuals and college students alike. In many respects, the NBC Merv Griffin Show catapulted Merv’s career, paving the way for his iconic run in first-run syndication (first for Westinghouse, then for Metromedia), while also cementing his relationship with NBC, the network for which he originally created the long-running game shows Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune.
Joining Phil will be Steve Randisi, author of The Merv Griffin Show: The Inside Story, a complete history of The Merv Griffin Show on television that also provides a capsule history of late night television in general, plus insight into Merv Griffin the person, personality, producer, and media mogul.
