The creator of The Equalizer (CBS, 1985-1989), Michael Sloan wrote and/or produced many of the most popular, successful, and iconic hour-long crime drama and adventure series of the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s, including Columbo (“Now You See Him,” arguably one of the best episodes of that series), McCloud, Harry O, Kung Fu: The Legend Continues, and the original Battlestar Galactica, as well as the revival of Alfred Hitchcock Presents and the reunion movies for The Man From U.N.C.L.E., The Six Million Dollar Man, and The Bionic Woman. As for The Equalizer, Michael not only created and produced the original TV series starring Edward Woodward, but produced the two box-office smash feature motion pictures The Equalizer and The Equalizer II starring Denzel Washington and published a series of best-selling original Equalizer novels (the latest of which is scheduled for release later in 2020).
Ironically, though Michael continues to leave his mark as a writer, he originally chose a different path. He began his career as an actor and film producer in England before a series of remarkable events opened the door to a career in television writing in the U.S. We’ll talk about that, and more, when Michael Sloan joins us in our second hour.
Michael Sloan’s memoir, “One More Thing, Sir…” The Musings of a Television Writer/Producer, is a charming, personable tale that is filled with great stories about his work alongside Glen Larson, Fred Silverman, David Janssen, Anthony Zerbe, David Carradine, Clint Walker, Richard Anderson, John Frankenheimer, Raymond Burr, Patrick McGoohan, Patrick Macnee, Denzel Washington and other movie and TV legends.
This week’s program will also include Part 2 of a conversation that began last week with author, screenwriter, raconteur, and novelist Marvin J. Wolf. Marv’s latest book, They Were Soldiers: The Sacrifices and Contributions of Our Vietnam Veterans (a collaboration with New York Times bestselling author Joseph L. Galloway), profiles fifty men and women from various walks of life who all served in Vietnam in one capacity or another. Among the veterans profiled in the book are former U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel, former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, and Oscar-winning filmmaker Oliver Stone.
They Were Soldiers also shows that the Vietnam generation is as worthy of respect and admiration as any generation of soldiers that preceded them—particularly given the animosity that many Vietnam veterans faced when they came home from the war. Marv will share stories that illustrate both extremes of the “coming home” spectrum (one of which involves novelist Norman Mailer) when he joins us in our first hour.
