This week’s program will include a return visit from Jennifer Armstrong, TV historian and the author of such books as Sex and the City and Us, Seinfeldia, and Mary and Lou and Rhoda and Ted and All The Brilliant Minds Who Made The Mary Tyler Moore Show a Television Classic. Jennifer’s latest book, When Women Invented Television, traces the history of the first decade of network television through the lives and accomplishments of four women: Irna Phillips, the originator of many of the first radio and TV soap operas; Gertrude Berg, star and creator of The Goldbergs, and the first woman to write and produce her own prime time series (not to mention brand herself); jazz pianist Hazel Scott, the first African American to host her own national prime time variety series (five years before Nat King Cole); and Betty White, who, long before The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Golden Girls, hosted one of the very first experimental television shows in Los Angeles before becoming one of the first stars, and first Emmy winners, of daytime television.
When Women Invented Television shows how Phillips, Berg, Scott, and White all paved the way for many of the forms of TV programming that we take for granted today—and how all four found themselves marginalized as television became more popular, and more lucrative, amidst the changing culture of the 1950s. Jennifer Armstrong joins us in our second hour.
Also joining us this week will be acclaimed singer/songwriter Severin Browne, the first white folk/country-type singer signed by Motown Records, and a popular guest at many singer-songwriter festivals and shows, especially in the Southern California area. We’ll ask Severin about some of his music influences (which include Paul Simon, James Taylor, and his older brother, Jackson Browne). We’ll also talk about his new CD, Overdue, and the creative process in general. Severin Browne will join us in our first hour.
When Women Invented Television is available wherever books are sold through HarperCollins. Overdue is available wherever music is sold.
