  1. A LIFE IN THE BALANCE
    Original Airdate: Jan. 19, 1969

Synopsis. Gene Holt (played by James Caan) and his fiancée, Elaine Donner (played by Quentin Dean), kidnap plastics heir Ed Janson (Dan Ferrone) outside the Janson estate in Long Island. Blood evidence found outside the estate tells Erskine that a struggle occurred during the kidnap attempt. (Indeed, when Janson tried to fight back, a gun went off, critically wounding Elaine.) Because of the extraordinary circumstances, Erskine convinces the Janson family to let the Bureau intervene immediately, before the kidnappers give any instructions. Meanwhile, with Elaine’s life hanging in the balance, Holt vows to kill Janson—regardless of whether the ransom is paid—if she dies.
