  1. THE LOST MAN
    Original Airdate: Mar. 24, 1974

Synopsis. Nationally syndicated newspaper columnist Mason Hammond (played by Don Porter) once faced a five-year prison term when he extorted a prominent U.S. congressman out of half a million dollars—a crime he committed because he desperately needed money to pay off his gambling debts. Rather than risk tarnishing his reputation, Hammond arranged for his cohort, Greg Davidson (played by Robert Foxworth), to take the rap for him; in exchange, Hammond promised to pay Davidson half the money at the end of his sentence. When Davidson learns through the grapevine that Hammond has frittered away the entire $500,000, he breaks out of prison, determined to even the score. The trail takes Erskine to the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Northern California. The inspector must find Hammond before Davidson kills him.
