One of the most recognized and respected film critics of our time, Leonard Maltin is best known for his annual paperback reference, Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide, a best seller for thirty years, as well as his companion volume, Leonard Maltin’s Classic Movie Guide (now in its third edition), which focuses on movies made before 1965, going back to the silent era. Author of numerous other books, including The Best 151 Movies You’ve Never Seen, The Disney Films, Of Mice and Magic: A History of American Animated Cartoons, The Great American Broadcast: A Celebration of Radio’s Golden Age, The Great Movie Comedians and The Art of the Cinematographer, Leonard Maltin has also been a fixture on television for more than three decades, including thirty years on Entertainment Tonight, the Maltin on Movies series for the Reelz Channel and a long association with Turner Classic Movies. Recently honored by the Los Angeles City Council, which declared this past Tuesday, April 24 as Leonard Maltin Day in Los Angeles, today he hosts the weekly podcast Maltin on Movies.
We’ll ask Leonard about the origins of his annual Movie Guide, plus we’ll talk about his friend Chuck McCann, why the term “instant classic” is an oxymoron, and how he still gets excited when talking to movie stars, even after all these years. Leonard Maltin will join us in our first hour.
Also joining us this week will be character actor Joseph Lyle Taylor. If you’re a fan of the FX series Justified, you know Joe as the corrupt sheriff Doyle Bennett, plus he’s appeared in such film and TV series as He Got Game, Girl 6, Summer of Same, Law and Order: SVU, 100 Centre Street, Masters of Sex, House, CSI, Dexter, Seven Psychopaths and The Dark Knight Rises. If you follow the stage, you know that Joe starred on Broadway with Edie Falco in the Tony Award-winning play Side Man, while if you have Amazon Prime, you know Joe as Frank Hooper, the psychopathic killer for hire who plays a prominent role in the second season of Sneaky Pete.
Also an accomplished writer and director (including the funny yet poignant short film The Glamour of It All), Joe has several other projects in the works. We’ll ask him about those, plus we’ll talk about his work with Spike Lee and Prince, his approach to playing villains in film and television, and how his experience as a writer often helps him as an actor. Joseph Lyle Taylor will join us in our second hour.
Also this week: We’ll say Happy Birthday to Willie Mays as part of an encore edition of The Sounds of Lost Television. Plus: This Week in TV History.
