First hour: Ed welcomes Steve Randisi, author of The Merv Griffin Show: The Inside Story, a comprehensive history of The Merv Griffin Show on television that also provides insight into Merv Griffin the performer, Merv the producer, and Merv the human being. Phil Gries co-hosts the segment. Also in this hour: Greg Ehrbar reviews the new DVD releases of Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman and Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town. Among the extra features included in each package is The Animagic World of Rankin/Bass, an excellent documentary that examines the impact that animators Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass had on television in the 1960s and 1970s, and how they have continued to influence the makers of holiday films and holiday TV programs today. Second hour: Ed welcomes actress and author Carole Wells. Carole’s latest book, Hijacked: An Eyewitness Account of Evil, relives the events of Sept. 27, 1977, when she, along with 155 other passengers and fourteen crew members, found their flight to Bangkok hijacked by members of the terrorist group The Japanese Red Army. The ordeal lasted five days, but it left a scar on Carole that did not begin to heal until forty years later.
