Kirk Taylor began his career in film and television more than thirty years ago with a role in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Cotton Club. From there, he worked with such varied artists as Stanley Kubrick, Spike Lee, Charles Bronson, Robin Williams, Danny Glover and Chaka Khan before embarking on a very successful career as an acting teacher and coach. (Indeed, Kirk’s many students as an acting teacher include such stars as Jesse L. Martin, Karina Lombard, and Chandra Wilson.) A student of both Lee Strasberg and Stella Adler, Kirk seemed content with teaching until opportunity stepped in and he was offered the part of Simon Peter, the apostle who denied Jesus, in Revival!, a new musical film based on the Gospel According to John. That, plus a leap of faith, opened the door for Kirk to a “second act” as a performer that continues to this day.
Kirk’s renaissance as an actor is only half the story. In many respects, his entire life story is a miracle in every sense of the word. You’ll understand what we mean by that when Kirk Taylor joins us in our first hour.
Produced by and starring Harry Lennix, Revival! also features Chaka Khan, Michelle Williams, T’Keyah Crystal Keyman, and Dawnn Lewis, plus an original Gospel-inspired score by Grammy nominee Mali Music (who also plays Jesus Christ in the movie). Revival! opens in select cities on Friday, April 19.
This being Easter weekend, our program this week will also include an encore presentation of our August 2016 conversation with Paul Green about the life and career of Jeffrey Hunter. Known for his starring roles as Martin Pawley in The Searchers and Christopher Pike in the original pilot episode of Star Trek, Hunter also played Jesus Christ in the 1961 film production of King of Kings directed by Nicholas Ray.
Hunter’s sudden death in May 1969 was a shock to everyone who knew him and left many wondering what direction his life and career would have gone, had he lived. Some of those questions are answered in Paul’s book Jeffrey Hunter: The Film, Television, Radio and Stage Performances, which we’ll discuss in our second hour. Also joining us hour will be author Mary Ann Anderson (Ida Lupino: Beyond the Camera, The Making of The Hitch-Hiker Illustrated). Mary also knew Jeffrey Hunter; her mother, actress Emily McLaughlin, married Hunter just three months before he died.
